Although models 1959 and 1987 had been in production since 1965 and the 2203 and 2204 had been in production since 1975, they were redesigned and introduced as JCM800 amplifiers in '81. In the 1980s Marshalls JCM800 line started out using G12-65 Celestions in the 1960 4x12 cabs. In the mid 1980s they changed to mostly G12T-75 though.

Marshall’s success in addressing those needs sealed the Lord of Loud’s legacy and forever changed the world of guitars and music. In the early 1960s, after deciding to build handwired amps that rivaled Fender’s current stock, Marshall and his two closest cohorts—Ken Bran, a shop repairman, and Dudley Craven, an 18-year-old apprentice—began building Fender amp clones that used 5881

The ’80s and early ’90s saw the introduction of the tiny one-watt MS-2, the popular 3005 solidstate Micro-Stack (based on the 5005), and the 10-watt 8001 Valvestate Micro-Stack (part of a series of Marshall amps launched in ’91 where all models with 40 watts or more used a 12AX7 tube in their preamps, to drive a solidstate power stage designed to sound and feel like an all-tube power amp), as well as numerous more high-powered combo amps, and even separate transistorized heads. In the early 1980s, Marshall tube amps sold in the USA were equipped with 6550s instead of EL34s. These amps can accept either type of tube. This was a common modification done to various models in the 1980s and 1990s. Some hard-rock guitarists prefer the sound of 6550s (they break up at much higher volumes than EL34s).

The Marshall JMP and JCM 800 series amps from the 1970s and 1980s are legendary.

One note: the larger box wasn't typically used for 50 watt amps until '72 or so. I say "typically" since with old Marshall you can't make any blanket statements. Marshall amplifiers are historically known for their ease of getting a great tone. Though Marshall has some powerful designs with a lot of tonal options, amp designs like the original Plexi, the JCM 800s, and the Silver Jubilees have straightforward panels that let you turn on, turn up, and play.
